Wild Golf

23. Jayne Storey - Part 1

Michael McDonald Season 3 Episode 3

Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast.  I am your host Michael McDonald.  Our guest this week and next week is Jayne Storey. Jayne is a performance practice coach whose deep understanding is based on over thirty years practising and teaching formal meditation as well as several Chinese martial arts including Tai Chi.  This discussion requires all of your attention, which is why I have broken it up into two bite sized episodes.  But it is potentially life changing for your game.   We discuss the need for a paradigm shift in how sports performance is understood.  The conventional view is that to perform at golf, you just need good technique and mental toughness based on positive psychology.  But we all know that a pretty swing and positive thoughts is not enough to perform under pressure. We discuss many topics including the mind-body connection, meditation, intention, visualisation, flow or the zone, and performance anxiety.  The paradigm shift requires an understanding that the only way to address performance anxiety is through having a deep practice that quiets your mind under the most intense pressure;  the sort of practice that Tiger learned from his mother and applied during his last victory at Augusta.  Jayne is the real deal;  her understanding is deep and profound and is not the sort of understanding you get from a mindfulness app or weekend course.  I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did.
